Sustainable Travel Finland (STF)

We are proud to announce that Arctic Circle Tourist Information has officially been awarded the Biosphere Certification and granted the right to use the Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) label — two internationally recognized marks of commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism.

These achievements reflect our ongoing dedication to creating a positive impact on our community, our environment, and everyone who visits the Arctic Circle.

What the Biosphere Certification Means

The Biosphere Certification is a globally recognized standard developed by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI). It certifies that an organization meets rigorous sustainability criteria based on the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This certification evaluates environmental protection, cultural preservation, social responsibility, and economic sustainability — ensuring that every aspect of our work contributes to a more sustainable world. For Arctic Circle Tourist Information, it means we have taken concrete steps to reduce our environmental footprint, promote local culture, support fair employment, and encourage sustainable practices among our partners and visitors.

Achieving this certification has involved a deep process of reflection, planning, and collaboration. It confirms that sustainability is not just a goal for us — it is at the core of everything we do.

The Sustainable Travel Finland (STF) Label

The STF label, granted by Visit Finland, is a national recognition for companies and destinations committed to developing tourism in a sustainable and responsible way. It guides organizations through a systematic path toward more sustainable operations, covering topics such as environmental management, community involvement, and climate action.

By earning the STF label, Arctic Circle Tourist Information joins a growing network of Finnish tourism companies leading the way toward a greener future. Visitors can now easily recognize our commitment to sustainability and make responsible choices when planning their trip to Lapland.

Our Commitment to a Sustainable Arctic Future

Located at the gateway to the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi, we are privileged to welcome travelers from all around the world to one of the most unique environments on Earth. With that privilege comes great responsibility.

We are committed to protecting the fragile Arctic ecosystem, preserving local traditions and Sámi culture, and supporting the well-being of our community. Our daily operations prioritize recycling and waste reduction, energy efficiency, and cooperation with local sustainable service providers.

We believe that every visitor has the power to make a difference — and we are here to help them do so. Through our information services, we guide travelers toward sustainable experiences that respect nature, support local livelihoods, and leave a positive impact.

Looking Ahead

Earning the Biosphere Certification and STF label is an important milestone, but it is also a new beginning. We will continue to learn, improve, and inspire others to travel responsibly and experience the Arctic in a sustainable way.

Together, we can ensure that the beauty of Lapland and the magic of the Arctic Circle remain for generations to come.

In our Arctic Circle Information at Santa Claus Village we have sustainability goals focused on preserving the Arctic environment while ensuring responsible tourism. Based on our role and location, our key goals for sustainable tourism include:

1. Minimizing Environmental Impact – Encouraging eco-friendly travel practices, such as reducing waste, promoting recycling, and supporting carbon-conscious tourism.

2. Promoting Sustainable Transportation – Informing customers of electric car charging services and electric car rental, public transportation, and other low-emission travel options.

3. Supporting Local and Ethical Businesses – Prioritizing partnerships with responsible local companies that align with sustainability values.

4. Educating Visitors on Responsible Tourism – Providing information on how tourists can minimize their footprint, respect local nature, and support conservation efforts.

5. Protecting Arctic Nature and Wildlife – Raising awareness about the fragile Arctic ecosystem and supporting initiatives that preserve Lapland’s natural beauty.
